My knowledge of family law and the factors that may affect your case is used to help calm your fears, make you feel better about your options, and to set expectations for the possible outcomes of the case. Many different types of cases fall into the category of family law, including:
- Divorce or Dissolution of Marriage
- Child Custody
- Child Support
- Distribution of Marital Property
- Paternity
- Separation Agreements
- Prenuptial Agreements
- Property Settlements
- Domestic Violence Cases
To resolve family law and divorce matters, I view filing a lawsuit and attending court and having a hearing in front of a judge as a last resort. Though I have argued many cases in front of judges, an out-of-court mediation is often more beneficial to clients, especially if children are involved. I try and resolve cases without going to trial, but only under terms that is most beneficial to the client.
I am also well-versed in the concerns facing individuals involved in child support cases. As a backup attorney for the New Bern Child Support Office, I work with many families on these issues, helping them understand the North Carolina child support guidelines. Please be advised, however, since I am employed by the Office, I am unable to take cases involving the Office directly.
In addition to helping families resolve child support disputes, I handle contempt actions that may occur when a former spouse violates the child custody, visitation, or child support order. Contempt actions may also be brought for not giving adequate notice of court hearings.
I offer my family law services on a flat fee basis. Flat fee means that attorney fees do not change based on an hourly rate. A client is not charged extra for any service that is provided directly by my office or employees, such as regular postage or copies. A client's telephone or direct access to me is not restricted by charging that client each time he or she has a question about his or her case.
